A thousand yards out to sea sits the historic Sandy Point Shoal Lighthouse, a cute, squat, three-story brick tower that’s over 100 years old.

Take a scenic drive down the Chesapeake on 4-South to St. Mary’s City, one of the oldest colonial settlements in the United States. Considered the birthplace of religious freedom, St. Mary’s City is home to its namesake college, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, as well as a historic reconstruction of the original colonial village. Actors dressed in period costumes play the part of early townspeople to educate and demonstrate to visitors how early Americans made their living.
